Just won an auction for a H5 paid 127.50 for it. The seller said it got no sound and dcc was wondering if it hard to convert it to sound and dcc. Also are there any know issue about these locomotive?
Can we see a photo of the locomotive and box it came in please?
Did the seller mention it could be converted to DCC with a little work?

that the link to the listing and the photo.
I own that exact model, including the road name and cab number. It is an outstanding steam engine. No known issues. It comes DCC Ready, and I added a non-sound decoder, an NCE D13SRP.
It can easily be converted to DCC with sound. Plenty of room in the tender. You will need to drill some small holes for the speaker, either in the coal load or on the bottom of the tender.

I never did add sound to this loco, but you may find this old thread helpful as a starter.

Lucky you! That´s really a nice price!
I also heard very positive reviews about this model, and as it comes DCC ready, DCC installation shouldn´t be a problem.
By the way do you think this model (engine only, not the tender!) would be suitable to model a NdeM HR-4 class?

Thanks guys for the reply
I think that C&O H5 kind of looks like it but then again i thought they were base on the USRA locomotive?
from what i readed on the NdeM HR4 were Alco built so it might look more like the USRA 2-6-6-2?
I have five of these, great locos. The C&O H5 is the USRA design, and the USRA design was largely based on the earlier C&O H class locos.
For my freelanced road, I have replaced the tenders with long vandy tenders:
I also have one C&O lettered H5 version and one C&O H4 version.

So which one did bachmann produce first the H4 or H5?
They produced the H5 first, in C&O as well as NKP, Wheeling & Lake Erie and undecorated versions starting in 2004. At one point they even offered weathered versions with light weathering effects.
During its many production runs, H5/USRA versions have been made in DCC ready, DCC onboard, and DCC with sound versions.
The H4 version was not offered until much later, introduced in 2010, in C&O with several different road numbers and in undecorated.
The H4 was only offered in DCC onboard or DCC with sound, but was supplied with jumpers to allow removal of the DCC decoder for best DC operation.

you can add dcc to any engine, just depends if it has a dcc connector. DCC ready usually means it has a connector.
I have the DCC with factory sound version and it is one of my favorite locos. Never any problems and the sound is great. You should be very happy with this engine.

The only negative thing I heard about this model so far is it´s tractive force: according to some owners, this model can´t pull more than 25 to 30 freight cars on level track, and on grades this number decreases rapidly.
Just got back from the post office with the locomotive it amazingly detail and converting to dcc should not be an issue as the tender has a PCB board.
