i have one to but i installed a tsumami and one with loc sound and runs good i really like the loc sound better it does run better on dcc!
A client of mine has two of these, and they both run beautifully and silently. He also has the Overland brass model of the same engine (Cass #5), and while it’s a tiny bit noisier, it also runs very smoothly. It’s just that when you put them side by side, you can see why the brass one sold for $1K…
I had to replace all of the plastic gears on mine which cost me $25. It hadn’t been ran that much when they stripped.
I am looking 4 a good running DCC on board shay for my logging layout.
I have 3 with DCC and Sound the newest one has taken to pausing on the track shutting down sound and then restarting. This is on clean track with clean wheels and cleaned contacts from each truck. I can run at scale speeds smooth for 10 min. and then just stops restarts and goes on. This is the same on NCE or Digitrax layouts. Any ideas?
I have 3 shays. sent them back to Bachmann two years ago cause the bevel gears cracked on the shafts. since then several more gears have cracked. I now see North West Short Line sells the replacements gears made out of metal. Item # 2800-6. http://shop.osorail.com/product.sc?productId=874&categoryId=14
I have two of these shays and they are good lookers, but the pluses stop there. The company refused to replace the tender that was damaged prior to opening the box by forces unknown. They further refused to sell the replacement part. Thanks to NWSL they run, on the layout they are used for eye candy as they lack pulling power. Another producer, that is customer oriented needs to get into the non brass geared locomotive market.
mine also ran fine right out of the box w/sound &dcc for that stop start thing check your reverse loop wiring or module and add some wt to the tender mine pulls 5 log cars at 14 mph
to paul wassow of ill change speed steps to 28
I got a Spectrum shay too. This thing will do anything i ask it to do. Sorry to those with problems. I have a sound/dcc model and it runs phenomenal! I couldn’t have asked for anything better. It also looks good when pulling the bachmann excursion cars. Great product from bachmann.
For those of you out there…get some Labelle 102 and lube the gears. I oil mine about once a week.
thank heavan for north west short line gears which are not easy to istall but do the job other wise this shay is a desplay item
i have purchase the bachmann 81909 80 ton shay is it a good train
really want one
I got one when they first came out for my birth day. It ran great and looked good too but in recent years most all the years have split. They are being replaced as they break with NWSL gears. I have recently bought a three truck climax and hope not to replace the gears any time soon. Hoping to see a grider style frame shay or better a willamette.
Model will negotiate REALLY tight curves or kinked track without drive shaft sliding out. Mine runs beautifully slow. A good value for the money.
