I have several new Bachmann locos that need black-ish touchup as part of re-lettering. What paint brand or color comes closest to matching the new Bachmann steam and diesel black?
Black is black … it’s the sheen that will give you fits trying to match. Factory finishes are usually a satin finish. Model Master has a Semi-Gloss black which is about as close as you will find right off the shelf. Whether it will blend perfectly is still no guarantee - you may need to add a bit of flat black or gloss black to nail it exactly.
Best bet would be to use the Semi-Gloss black and give the whole thing a final clear coat of satin finish for a perfect blend.
Mark.
Wouldn’t worry that much to get an absolute match. Touch up w/ engine black and do a bit of weathering and a dull coat. The only time that engine ever looked that way as “out of the box” is when it was rolled out of the paint shop. Even a couple of days in the weather and some rain shows let alone any road use will show some weathering.
Floquil makes an “Engine Black” that should work. For the best results, apply it with an airbrush.
My newest Bachman (EM-1) shined so “bright” , i couldn’t wait to weather it! Really looked bad w/ the weathered hoppers.
Much better…
