Bachmann N scale 2-8-8-4 EM-1 steam locomotive
Thank you for sharing your video of your layout featuring the Bachmann EM-1 2-8-8-4. I was really impressed with this engine. I wasn’t considering this engine before but now I am going to get one. I just recently purchased the Bachmann EMD DD40AX Centennial #6929 and am very pleased with the Soundtraxx sound unit, the detailing, the painting and the running characteristics.
Kudos to Bachmann and thanx for sharing your beautiful layout.

NIce vid – dunno if you noticed it, but the eccentric on the rear locomotive is off. Looks like the bolt might’ve come loose on you (and I’ve had it cause binding issues).
Dan - good eye noticing the eccentric kick. I adjusted since then and is looking much better. Thanks for your feedback.
Hi Bill - Thanks for your positive feedback. Please note that in N scale the EM-1 doesn’t have a sound decoder. I also have the DD40AX with sound and I agree; it does have very satisfying running characteristics. I did 2 recent videos on the DD40AX which can be seen here in MR’s listings.
Hello Dan, first view of your rr and the B&O EM1. I model B&O/C&O/PRR south of Cincinnati circa 1946-1956. I am a 71 year old train nut! Your cliffs and water are so excellent. I have to admit I need to see a caboose on the end of all freights. I am almost ready to start a shelf rr that reverses in my huge walk in closet, and was thinking of a helix unseen in the closet, but am having a hard time with upper level track plan. I just bought the Bachman 2-10-2 and had it decaled for C&O and a correct number applied. It looks and runs excellently. Hooray to Bachman! I’m thinking about the EM1, need info on tracking and pulling freight cars. I really wanted a Bachman C&O 2-6-6-2, but I’m told it can only pull 8 or 9 cars, that it is built too light, and has no traction tires. Will watch more of your videos, wish you would image of last car longer.GREAT JOB, THANX!
Hi Dan: nice video but I noticed one thing. Your NYC freight did not have a caboose, I’m quite that is Kosher. Steam and cabeese go together like Mac and cheese, babies and Diapers. Unless you are a member of the Lucius Beebe Society and fervently believe the railroads soon found out diesels were just a flash in the pan and went back to their reliable steam locomotives, at least that is my excuse for pulling a stack train with a Big Boy, but thanks to Uncle Pete that may be come a reality. They do say there is a prototype for everything. Nice video and that is the only time I saw a EM-1 in passenger service, but being in EsPee territory and having enough grey hair I can remember articulateds in passenger service.
I just bought one of these and have not discovered the sound as yet, since the programming this decoder is extremely limited. The paperwork is very generic ans does not even list or mention the decoder in this engine. Can you help me? So far it is just sitting on the programming track.
The EM-1 pulls extremely well. I was so impressed I bought another one. They are evenly matched right out of the box. The EM-1 is the best performing steam locomotive that I have … except now I have the Kato FEF.
