I Bought a 1990 Bachmann SD40-2 SBD Railroad. This engine is great on straights but on my curves and turnouts it likes to jump of the track on the back axle which also has a rubber band drive.
The Qustion is can i remove the rubberband drive and the engine run fine. Also the engine is farely light how and what can I use to give it the right weight?
Thanks
This was pretty common with the 90s era standard Bachmann diesels. They were so so cheap, that they didn’t even have proper weight to keep them on the track, or even put enough pressure on the tires to make them useful.
Since your diesel’s only a single truck drive, I would keep the rubber traction tires on. If they dry out and start cracking, they can be replaced with Calumet tires. As for the weight, I would use lead. You can get it in shot form (tiny BBs used for filling bullet shells), from an auto parts dealer, or as ready made stick-on weights from A Line. You only need a couple ounces placed inside over the motorized truck to bring the traction up, and it should work fine after that.
