Hi Guys
I just recently purchased a Bachmann Shay 3 truck with sound. After running a little bit out of the box. The loco immediately stopped moving, however the sound was still going.
I believe it is a a binding issue. Did anyone else experience this same problem? If so any recommendations on how to fix this problem?
Kindest regards,
CASO
Check for split gear!
There are a number of posts in this forum, dealing with this issue. The best advice seems to get the NWSL replacement gear kit.
Yes they have had a whole batch of both the shay and the climaxes with gears that are too tight and have cracked with little of no run time. Some of the On30 forums ( yahoo on30 conspiracy) have been beating these problems to death. At the moment NWSL is your best bet as Bachman is out of replacement parts as of two weeks ago when a good friend of mine treid to order two sets for his shays. The NWSL guys are your best bet they will liley be metal gears not the nylon ones so they should perform flawlessly once you get them installed.

The Split gear is the most likely culprit, I’ve been lucky with mine so far, K-nock, K-nock. To me, I would think you’d still hear something trying to turn inside, but I’ve not studied the guts of a Shay.
However, Also be sure to check the wire plugs running from the rear truck/tender to the main body. On occasion, these plugs and their counterparts in other DCC steamers can work loose, resulting in the same condition of sounds working, but no motor control. Again, my Shay has not done this, it’s a DCC no sound (yet) but I’ve had this problem bfore with a Proto 0-8-0 and numerusly with a Blueline 2-8-2.
