I just had an idea of putting up pics off different trains and cars. I was wondering if anyone else had this idea. If so post pics.
Well not strictly a background ( the blue area has yet to be finished with clouds etc )but sorta what you seem to want to see

Great pic thanks
I used a 12" hollow core door to create a low scene divider on my peninsula. I could have made it a bit taller, but this gives me an adequate back drop for photography, and allows me to see over it when I’m operating trains by myself.

I guess it depends if one considers it distracting from the visual effect of the layout. I know our club’s original idea was to keep it nice and blue. We just ran out of space and pictures and other things began to appear. Now every time I take a picture it is obviously a model train set because there are pictures floating in the air over the trees/buildings.
Gotta add a yard on that left side, Unc Bob, that has been bothering me for some time now - LOL

Nah
Layout is much too small for one with the trains going roundy round
In fact I am thinking of taking out the engine house–sand buildings–ash pit and just have a track side water tank and coaler and control tower
To the OP:
Sounds like you want to decorate the train room with framed pictures and posters and photographs and memorbilia - as you have seen, people have done this, and actually for as long as I can remember. Also, you have recieved some advice it may look odd, these posters etc hanging above the layout may distract from the it.
OK, what if you instead mounted these posters on the fascia below the layout (which has also been done for a long time, along with labeling the towns & geological features on the layout right above the fasica). This won’t work if you are using a curtain or drapery as your layout fascia, but if you are using wood or paneling or masonite etc, it could look good.
Finally, what if you put a valance above the layout to hide the overhead lights - this you could decorate with posters and it should be high enough to not be distracting.
Save the big posters and picture for above the workbench or stairwell etc.
