Baldwin Mallet 2-4-4-2

I’m interested in obtaining an HO brass Baldwin Mallet 2-4-4-2, as used on the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. I understand that Gem and Oriental once made such models.

Please contact me if you have one for sale. I’ll attend the Train Show in Cincinnati on Friday 8 July.

I am sorry I cannot give you specific information, but I have heard these exist. Good luck with your search.

I believe they were made by GEM and Olympia models. Your best bet is to keep checking on ebay, and the online sites for places like Caboose Hobbies, The Caboose, Mitchells, Gunnings ect. They list there brass inventory on the net, that is about the quickest way to find one, some offer a waiting list so if one comes in, they give you a call. Good Luck Mike

GEM and Oriental is correct.

Many years ago (sometime in 1970’s I believe) one of the GEM models was on the cover of MR.

The Oriental one was in the Powerhouse line. They show up on ebay from time to time.

The Oriental one runs much better than the GEM, about the same as a very good Kato diesel.

The GEM has better detailing.

My wife will not let me sell our Oriental model.

I have the Gem model. It has never been a great runner. This topic was posted before. I’ve been told its due to the springing used. The Gem has a hair spring vs the more typical coil used on most sprung brass models. If you can’t find one and are interested in mine let me know. Consider it a project.

Just to ask how much would you want?

The Oriental Powerhouse came out around1992 and is not a true brass engine,it has brass details on a non brass boiler.I have one but is not for sale.

Pete, I do not have a layout and may never attempt more than a shelf diorama, so quality of operation is secondary to good detail. (I am new to this Forum, not sure how to contact you directly. ) Glenn
