The last ballast is now down. The job started off looking like this. All structures and vehicles have been removed to avoid damage. I wish I had painted the roadbed BEFORE laying the track. As it is, any missing ballast shows up bright yellow pine color. I should have painted all the road bed ballast color before laying the track. Live and learn. 
Ballast tools are cheap & simple. Woodland Senic’s medium gray, white glue diluted 50:50 with water, wet water (tap water with a drop of liquid dishwash detergent in it), an acid brush to spread and shape the ballast, and a plastic cup to pour the ballast where it is needed.
Many hours of brushing and shaping come next. And a lot of wet watering and glue pouring. Use plenty of glue, it soaks in and dries clear.
