Best paint stripper for models.

I am trying to paint a brass caboose and have screwed it up. For some reason it went on thick and blotchy. I used Floquil and it did not act the way it has in the past. I want to strip the paint and start over. What would be the quickest amd safest way to strip the paint off this caboose? - Nevin

I use Pine-Sol and it works really well. Now I’m not sure if it’ll have any adverse effects on brass, but for the price (and the uses for any extra) I’d certainly suggest it.

Did you prime it before painting it??

“Did you prime it before painting it??”

I will the next time. - Nevin

I know this isn’t answering the original question, but I have also heard of folks baking paint onto their brass models. Try explaining that one to the wife, as she asks why you are putting your $650 brass locomotive in the oven!!!

I use Poly S ELO paint stripper, still the best for me. [2c]

Chameleon works Great for ME!!![:D][:D][:D]

Berryman’s Chemdip soak eats anything not metal. Water stops the action, and then blow dry with compressed air. Originally used on carberators. It has a basket for small parts. It must be used outdoors, and will burn you bad if you insist on touching it. You can only get it at auto or tractor parts places and it is sold only by the gallon. It runs about $20+. I use it to clean all sorts of small metal parts, including aluminum, copper, brass, cast iron, steel, etc.

It is overkill for the model RR, unless you use it elsewhere, like the speeder I’m restoring.

The key is metal parts only. It turns plastic into goo, and makes rubber swell up. The only non metal thing not affected is bake-lite.

Foequil still sprays on and lays down best when using Diosol. Diesol has been replaced with a thinner. Diosol is mainly toululene a nasty stuff. I know you are painting brass, but a couple of times spraying Athearn shells w/ the newer airbru***hinner caused major problems by crazing the plastic on the shell. Definatly prime or barrier before top coats.
If Pinesol is not aggresive enough use Poly S or brake fluid. Some brass has glued parts as well as soldered. Sometimes these pieces may become loose.

I’m glad you asked, I’ve been looking for model strippers.

I’ve been told that the brake fluid available here in Australia is now a different formula to the original and that it isn’t as good. Don’t let me stop you trying it! You might have to use an old toothbrush in nooks and crannies etc. Good luck whichever method you try!

Easy-Off oven cleaner works!
