Best software for a DCC layout and Linux?

Hi,

What would you folks consider to be the best software to run on Linux to control a DCC layout? I run Centos 5.4 on one of my machines - same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

I have an area in the basement of about a 270 square feet of L shaped area to work with at present - 24’ x 13.5’, with the stairwell.

There is no best, only what might be best for you.

You might have to run Windows in Linux using Wine I think. I have heard of people running Windows like that but definitely Off Topic. Try a Forum for your OS. One must exist.

I run Mint 7 Gnome but have not touched Windows for over six years.

I see in a couple Linux forums people running Windows in a Linux environment.

I have several machines at home, I run Linux on two of them exclusively, no reason to run wine, I don’t dual boot. I also have a few windows machines.

I’m just trying to do some initial homework as to what kind of DCC layout software is out there that’s all, curious what others use.

JMRI http://jmri.sourceforge.net/ will run on a Linux machine (or any machine running Java for that matter). I’ve only used the Windows version, but it is powerful and packs a lot of features.

I’m running jmri in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as well as Dreamlinux 3.5 using a 1.2MHz AMD on my N-O&NW…It’s running a Wangrow System One DCC system and it functions just fine.

It’s not a hard job to install it all, but not a good way to learn about installing Linux programs…things can and sometimes do go wrong.

Good luck with it; I’m sure you’ll like it once you try it.
