The railways started with a small loco roster the roster can be found at the Pilbara Railways Historical Society’s website above. (holiday-wa.net)
Over the years, the railways of the Pilbara have run some interesting locos, from standard C636’s, M636’s, C36-7’s, SD50’s, Dash-8’s, Dash-9’s, AC4400’s, AC6000’s and soon SD70ACe’s.
Currently there are a few SD40 or SD40-2’s used as second or helper units as well as switching of yards and loaders and unloaders. I know that the C36-7’s and the SD50’s were built locally in Australia with the C636’s and M636’s were rebuilt to dash-8’s.
The C36-7’s and SD50’s were sold to American loco lease companies and I have seen both models on American rails in pictures. I think that the C36-7’s went to Minnesota Commercial and I’m not sure about the SD50’s. I think that they belong to NREX?
Incidently, I forgot to add that most of the rebuilt loco’s if not all from the C636/M636 models had had a unique cab added. Here it’s called a “Pilbara Cab”. It’s a big boxy style cab, I don’t know what the room was like in them, but I think that they were better than the old ALCo/Montreal Cabs. I know that the cabs were all airconditioned because of the extreme heat up there and the cabs had extr
