I knew about the GP7u/GP9us being ECOd. 25 of them. I didn’t realize it was going to be such a big order.
Also, I have to assume the report is wrong and that the GEEPs are getting 710-T2 engines.
I also assume the report is wrong and these are not only meeting T0+. For one thing, why rebuild the SD40-2s if all you want to meet is T0+? Reman the 645 and slap the CFR 1033 part on. Plus, they only need to meet Tier 0+ if they’re staying in Canada. For US work, they need to be Tier 2 anyway. They’re probably called GP20C and SD30C, because railroads can call them whatever they want.
Anyway, here’s the article.
[quote] Large EMD ECO Order Coming … Canadian Pacific will become the largest operator of EMD’s ECO line of locomotives by the end of the decade. The railroad is scheduled to receive approximately 500 locomotives over the next eight years from the builder. While the exact split between models is not known, it’s expected that approximately 350 six-axle and 150 four-axle locomotives will be constructed at the rate of 60 per year. The four-axle units will be constructed at EMD’s Muncie, Indiana, facility while the six-axle units will be built at Progress Rail’s Mayfield, Kentucky, shop. CP expects to receive the first units of the order during the third quarter of 2012. Here is what’s known about each of the two models being built:
Six Axle units will be designated SD30C-ECO with the “C” denoting crashworthiness of the cab, frame, and fuel tank. Cores for the locomotives will (at least initially) come from CPs fleet of SD40-2s. As of late October, CP was expected to send the first ten SD40-2s to Mayfield to begin the rebuild order. The frames, trucks, and internal components will be reused while a new (standard) cab, to be designed and constructed by EMD, and a fuel tank will be built new for each unit. With the increased emissions requirements, the locomotives will feature flared radiators (simila

By 2020, Canadian Pacific will become the largest operator of EMD’s ECO line of locomotives. CP are to receive nearly 500 locomotives over the next eight years from the builder. While the exact split between models is not known, it’s estimated 350 six-axle and 150 four-axle locomotives will be constructed at the rate of 60 per year. CP expects to receive the first locos of the order during the 3rd quarter of 2012.
Four-axle GP20C-ECOs will be constructed at EMD’s Muncie, IN, facility. Six-axle SD30C-ECOs will be built at Progress Rail’s Mayfield, KY, shop. Rebuilt CP locos need only meet Tier 0+ emissions. Here is what is known about models:
Six-axle SD30C-ECO’s (“C” signifying crashworthiness of the cab, frame, and fuel tank) will, at least initially, have cores from the CP fleet of SD40-2s. CP has sent the first ten SD40-2s to Mayfield. Frames, trucks, and internal components will be reused. A new fuel tank and cab, being designed and constructed by EM
I see what they are doing. There is certainly enough work for 350 six-axle units within Canada, (3 at a time east of Calgary, 5 at a time west of Calgary, all in DP mode, just on the mainline) especially when you consider that as these new units arrive CP can get rid of the leasers it has, when the lease terms expire. They also have a need for new four-axle power, as now they are so short they try sending in six-axle equipment to do the work. Not that this is causing derailments, but I suspect the remedial track work required might be getting them down. I guess 150 new units is what they need.
As to the Tier 0+ business, I assume they will have no problem utilizing all the new units up here, which means they can send their still serviceable older DC units that can be grandfathered in, to the US and save the cost of Tier 2 upgrades or purchasing new units. Of course they will still have to buy the newest in AC power.
I’m curious to know what Pershing Square thinks of this.
Just a quick Oservation from the OTR side look for HUGE and I mean HUGE orders in the next couple Years prior to Tier 4 coming out. Why the New units are not required to meet new emmisions specs until the next Heavy OH if I read the EPA regs correct so if they are built or HEAVY OH before Jan 1 2015 they only need to be Tier 3 which is alot less to meet than Tier 4 so look for alot of orders in Tier 3 stuff as it was alot less to meet than the 4 coming up. The big boys in OTR did the same thing Hell Schiender replaced its ENTIRE fleet in 2006 and did not get another new truck until 2011 they kipped the entire First gen DPF mess entirely. Heartland Express did the Same also. Called if you can save the cash in Maintance you can be way ahead when they get the bugs worked out.
