Ed, that truely is the bottom line, it’s just sad that some engineer ( hopefully not some of our friends in here) might have to pay the price because some parents are so involved in “Me, Myself and I”
So what is Penny Lane a reference to ?
Penny Lane is a street in Liverpool, however some of the references may be rather sly, such as the fireman and his “clean machine”.
Haven’t heard “Play Chicken With the Train” but this kind of controversy comes up every so often. Can’t think of another train song, but how about “I Can’t Drive 55” (by Sammy Hagar) This was played before they raised the highway speed limits again. Did it really encourage people to drive over the speed limit? To my way of thinking it was just a song…
Or what about “Earl’s In The Trunk” ?
Speaking of Sammy Hagar (i.e. Van Halen before ge got there), isn’t it cool that there are two hit songs about Illinois Central passenger trains?
Guthrie’s City of New Orleans being the first and Van Halen’s Panama being the second, of course.

You make some very excellent points, Ed! Many parents today are not like they used to be and it is usually their fault for their kids turning out the way they do. My mom had Dr. Phil on once and there was this guy on who loved violent video games and played them all the time with his 5-year-old son. He considered this quality time. You have to wonder about these people.
When it comes to music, what really counts is how it sounds, at least for me anyway. What the artist is singing about isn’t nearly important as how the song itself sounds when it comes to your personal preference for music that you enjoy.
In regard to subliminal messges in various songs, they may be there, but to me that doesn’t make the song offensive if it isn’t obvious. I’m a Beatles fan and have always been under the impression that Penny Lane was about what Hugh Jampton said, not gabe’s idea. But, hypothetically speaking, even if gabe’s assumption is correct, the lyrics themselves are innocent enough that even if there was some offensive meaning in them, 99.99% of people would never know it. By the way, did you know that when the song Louie Louie first came out that there were acusations made by people that there were subliminal messages and secret sexual meanings behind the lyrics? As ridiculous as that sounds, it’s true.
Also, a great deal of rap music probably has lots of dirty things in it, but, to tell you the truth, I can’t understand what they’re actually saying a lot of the time.
I haven’t heard the song I Play Chicken With The Train yet either, but I did get the lyrics off the net if anyone is interested.
[Chorus - Big & Rich]
I play chicken with the train
Play chicken with the train train
Unh huh huh unh huh huh
You know that I play chicken with the train
Play chicken with the train train
Unh huh huh unh huh huh yeah
[Verse 1 - Cowboy Troy]
Hold 'em up! Here we go!
All the hicks and chicks feel
Exactly, and it sounds pretty good too.

I listen to Snoop Dogg, and Eminem because the beats are good and they way they match up their rimes with the beats sound pretty good to me. Heck this is why I listen to rap. I also listen to death metal and other forms of heavy metal for the same reasons. Also, some of the conotaions they make are down right halarious!!! However, some of the stuff they sing about isn’t exactly right and it’s defainly not something that should be influencing kids to partake in such activities.
