BLACK LIQUID SMOKE

IS IT POSSIABLE TO ADD SOMETHING TO LIQUID SMOKE,SO IT WILL COME OUT BLACK(DIESEL),YES ,NO,MAYBE,AND NOT HURT SMOKE UNIT ?,BOTH MY DIESEL’S SMOKE REAL WELL,BUT SOMETIMES VERY HARD TO SEE,JUST WONDERING,THANKS====== HUB PS THANKS TIM ON HELP WITH TWO-ENGINE LASH-UP,WE EVEN DID A 3-ENGINE.

There has been a lot of discussion on this topic on some of the other Forums. To date, I have heard of no way to change the formulas of the various manufacturers smoke fluids that would turn the smoke black. I think manufacturers have been limited by the fact that to turn out a black smoke the fumes coming out the stack would have to contain particulates (as would a real steam engine). These particulates would most probably not be good for our health and would cause additional dust on our layouts.

The way I look at it, a good fireman on a steamer always keep his engine smoking clean (no black smoke - a sign of improper firing), on my railroad, I have nothing but the finest fireman in the industry (and they work cheap too).

Happy railroading.

THANKS TIM: FOR FAST ANSWER,WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS SUBJECT WHILE RUNNING OUR TRAINS AT"TRACKSIDTRAINS.NET",PEOPLE THAT COME BY SAY LOOK AT STEAM COMING OUT THE TOP OF DIESEL,SURE,YOU BET,SO I TOLD THE GUY’S I WOULD SEND OUT THE QUESTION,MAYBE NEED TO PUT ON SIDE OF FUEL TANKS,RUNNING ON PROPANE==== HUB

Hi Hub,

Alco diesels would smoke so bad they were nicknamed “honoray steam engines”.

Tim P.

Yeah. They look cool doing that!!![:D]

(yes I did just dig this up from page 1,496!)[8D]

Can someone translate for me? [banghead]

"Imitation (Liquid) Smoke" has been heated, vaporized Oil, which is intended to look more like STEAM, not Carbon emissions.

PENALTY is that vaporized oil condenses: (best case) leaving a thin coat of oil on things (worst case) droplets of oil on the top of your engine to clean up.

STEAM exhaust is a mixture of steam and soot. It used to cover everything white (brick mortar, snow, laundry) in Chicago, and cities served by railroads that burned coal. Oil burning produces carbon gasses with less soot.

Is that what you really wish for**? Move to a freeway.**

Ya gotta admit though ,it WOULD be cool to see black smoke come out of an ALCO as it ramps up. HMMM a railginder with a smoke unit would be cool too. But just long enough to get some photos. Otherwise the whole layout room will have that 30’s epression era look to it in one operating session. Maybe one a them little smoke bombs they make for the 4th. Any chemistry types out there care to make a suggestion?

We are talking about the fluid put into model trains that when heated makes pretend smoke. Currently all the smoke fluid available comes out as a white vapor.

And it leaves an oily film all over your track, scenery, and everything else around the room. It’s best to leave the smoke to the real trains.

Some people are allergic to the ingredients in liquid smoke, which is basically Mineral Oil. We don’t allow smoking at our club.
