Block detection

Can someone please explain what block detection is used for? Do I need this on my layout?

I’m getting the Digitrax Super Cheif Xtra 8amp starter set with DS64s. Do I also need to get the BD4 and SE8C Digitrax Occupancy Detection as well?

I have no idea if I can use this, or need this. I will be the only operator, and I want to run at least 3-4 trains during on operating session.

My layout here:

Quick answer, no you don’t need block detection.

However, if you want an operating signal system, or to let a computer run the layout, you’ll need to install some type of detection.

If you want to have workign signals or automation, then you need block detection - use the BDL168 for that. If you plan to be the only operator and only have 3-4 locos running, you don’t need an 8 amp set, the 5 amp system will be MORE than powerful enough. Plus 5 amp power supplies are a lot easier to find.

The Magna-Force power supply from Tony’s is NOT an 8 amp capable power suppyl regardless of how they try to sell it. Their own test results show a serious drop off in output voltage when getting close to 8 amps. It’ perfectly fine for 5-6 amps.

Block detection is one example of the use of sensor technologies for model railroads. There are a number of other ways you could do this in addition to detecting current draw. I am in the process of writing up a comprehensive series of articles covering the various kinds of sensors. The first article is here (http://coralfringe.blogspot.com/2010/01/sensors-for-model-railroads-1.html).
