BNSF Coal Through Rochelle Now?

The last two days I have seen to BNSF coal trains go east at Rochelle. I’m wondering if they are going to start using the Rochelle route now? Or are they just taking a detour? (Even though I saw the same symboled trains go yesterday in Ft. Madison without any problems). What do you guys think?

I haven’t seen Coal Trains at Rochelle but their was at one time Iron Ore trains but that is strange if they want to go to Ft. Madison they would go via the Barswto Sub

The ones that go through Ft. Madison are different. They go east empty and go west loaded. The last two days there have been loaded coal trains at Rochelle on the BNSF and the weird thins they are all DETX, or DEEX owned cars.

that would be for detroit edison.they come across csx and go up to detroit either at deshler or fostoria or go over to first energys plant around the cleveland area.I have seen them on ns too.got a pic of 5 bnsf engines with a cefx buissness car between the first 2 engines with an empty headed west through deshler.

Figured it was Detroit, just can’t figure out why they’re going through Rochelle now.

Dave
what was really nice was to see coal in csx hoppers for a change. mostly i see them in those leased cars.had a train of hoppers going north through deshler too.

If the coal is from the mines up near Sheridan WY, (Tongue River Coal out of Decker MT), they can run north via Miles City then across to the twin cities and South. Not sure why they would do that, but the miles wouldn’t be too much more vs going south via Alliance.

If this is the case then why didn’t they think of this before?
Dave

If they are going to continue to run train through Rochelle, how many trains will that add per day/week to the BNSF lines?

Dave
Manitowoc, WI

That would probably make 15 extra BNSF trains a week through Rochelle.

There was recently a derailment on the BN at Plattesmouth, Nebraska. Could a few trains be using this northerly route as a detour? How consistent have these trains been?

That might have been the reason. There have been about two each day. But there haven’t been any today.
Dave

Mmmm-hmm! Bet that’s it! Especially if you don’t see any more for a while.
