Boxcar color

What Polly Scale color would best approximate the “brown” on Conrail boxcars? I mean the unweathered color. The photos I’ve seen show cars that are pretty well weathered.

If Polly Scale isn’t particularly close, what other brand + color do you recommend?

Thank you for any input!

While I’m not modelling the Conrail era, I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen Conrail Freight Car Brown (or something similarly-named) on the paint shelves of the LHS.

Perhaps a better approach would be to pick the colour (or better still, mix the colour) which to your eye appears the best match to the prototype cars which you’ve seen.

I use red automobile primer from a rattle can.

All of the above would probably be correct. If two CR box cars were exactly the same shade, you can bet they were painted in the same shop on the same day.

Not only that, but those two cars have been to the same places, at the same times, for the same degree and amount of “weathering”.

Pollyscale ‘freight car red’ looks close enough.

That’s why I was looking for something close to the unweathered shade - the photos I’ve seen each looked very different.

Thanks! The rattle-can primer shades look too red to me. I see “box car red” under Pollyscale; the ‘sample’ in the Walthers catalog looks close to the color in photos I’ve seen. I wasn’t sure if the sample was anywhere close to the actual color of the paint.
