I have one as well and agree with the review. The tiny fan that powered the smoke unit did not work, and I had to send my unit back under warranty for the repair. Works fine now. The only strange thing is the smoke unit is assigned as Function 7–if the “7” is turned on and visible in the LCD window of the DCC hand unit, the unit will NOT smoke–only when the “7” is NOT visible will the smoker work! Very counter intuitive…
NYC, Import an H-7. The 4-6-4, 4-8-2 L-3 and L-4, and the 4-8-4 have been imported to death. In addition, they were small classes compared to the Mikado,s, which we have none. The Trix 2-8-2 is a great running engine, but is noy a NYC match.
This would have been a good one to do a product video?
I now have both models (2002 and 2009) and I am very satisfied with them. I appreciate the new model with its new features (smoke, new sounds…). Canadian National used to have some Hudsons and I put Canadian National decals on both of them.
I also painted driver tires white as they were in the forties.
Jason Schron, president of Rapido Trains, visited my layout recently and was very pleased with the new model.
Leandre De Celles, Quebec City, Canada.
I received this when I purchased their grab bag. Even when the decoder was missing, and that I had to rewire it, it still looks great.
My loco had several faults new out of the box.I had to pay return postage to Broadway Limited & am still waiting to hear from them or get it back.
I’ve seen videoes on the internet on it and I’d rather buy an mth steamer I think mth modles are packed with more features and detail also better sounds. I don’t own an mth steamer yet but I plan to buy the 4449 soon. P.S. I know mth modles are more $$$ but in my opinoin I think mth’s steamers are worth it and like I said earlier MORE FEATURES!!!1
I have two of the 2002 models, as for as the sound go, I brought two of the new sound chips from Qsi and installed them. A good friend of mine as one of the new Hudsons, my two sounded better to the both of us!!! I really don’t care to much for the smoke any way, so that don’t have any affect on me at all… Smoke or not, so lone as it looks and run, pull good well I’m a happy camper.
Hi Jim,
We should have a video up for you to watch soon. Stay tuned.
Dana
…can’t wait to get mine…currently with friends in VA so I can collect it on my next trip to the US in the fall…I can bring it back as part of my personal import allowance…importing it direct adds 15% VAT to the price …grrrr! Some of the reported faults are a bit worrying though
I presume the second roadname should read “Toronto” Hamilton and Buffalo. Never heard of Toledo Hamilton and Buffalo!
Just arrived yesterday!! I have not run it as yet, but it looks like a big dollar brass! Those of us still on DC now have an opportunity for well detailed brass-like steam loco at a reasonable price. Have not heard mine but the evaluations and live sound on here are great. Can’t wait to run mine.
Good work Dana - keep complaining about the “chrome plated” pilot wheels. Maybe the manufacturers will some day listen.
I recieved mine new in the box, very well packaged. However, when I tested the locomotive the fan to drive the smoke out the stack did not work. I received a new one without a question and it works great. BLI backed up there product!
When I received the new 2009 model the box stated Scullin drivers as ordered pity the drivers that were attached to the loco where spoked Disappointed with this. I suppose that is what happens in when assembled in China.
When compared there are no visual differences in the loco itself compared to the 2002 model.
The PT4 tender is really awesome, compliments the loco.
The new sound is fantastic I have compared the sound to actual sound tracks recorded by Donald J Krofta in the early 50’s you cannot tell the difference, Smoke is neat takes getting used to.
I now have both models (2002 and 2009) and I am very satisfied with them.
BLI carry on the good work.
I love the fact that so many model J-1e’s are numbered 5344. Lionel’s 700E keeps being reborn!
Nice looking Model,it would be nice if there was a video of this Locomotive in action available to subscribers in addition to article reprint on line.
This looks to be a fine addition for anyone who models NY steam in the late 30’s to the early 40’s and have the bucks to afford this model and a DCC system to get the most out of this Locomotive.
I agree with Mr. Kawala comments in his review about how that the background sounds should only be on a background sound decoder and not on the Locomotives sound decoder, it would sound strange to hear those sounds coming from the locomotive as it is running.
I was wondering if there are lighting effects for the firebox for this model, since there is no mention of it in the review I would assume that there are none.
You could add it in with a fire effect LED lighting kit such as those available from Miniatronics (http://www.miniatronics.com) or Walthers (http://www.walthers.com) or other outlets, but I know from the Miniatronics Catalog and Web Site that they do have such kits for doing that effect. I belive it could be wired into the Decoder for switching it on or off as needed to simulate a fire in the firebox of the boiler for more realism on the Locomotive when viewed from the tender, as I have seen videos of Locomotives with this effect in them, but these were O scale ones in a Lionel Nation DVD, but I think one could put this into a HO scale model as well provided there was room for it and you would probably have put slots in the door for the firebox for the light to be seen unless there were one already in place. But this is up to the modeler to decide if they want to do this and if they have the skill to do this, though I am sure there are books available to show you how to do this from Kalmbach Publishing Co.
All in all a interesting review, as I said I wish there was video of the Model in motion for subscribers to see as it would add to the review I think to see and hear it in action and to hear the
The detail on this loco is excellent, and mine performs very well.
The plug coupling between loco and tender is rather delicate and does not give a good positive connection.
Road names: … Toledo, Hamilton & Buffalo"…, should read Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo
Typo’s do creep into everything.
