Budget cuts threaten England’s National Railway Museum

I surely hope that this museum does not close. In June 2011, I visited the museum and it has a wonderful collection that is mostly indoors, so the collection is protected from the elements. To have it close would truly be a loss to the railroad hobby and to history of England.

Margaret Thatcher was correct about running out of other people’s money. Socialists think it will never happen. Guess what? It does.

Now that government is jumping overboard, don’t the British have private individuals who are willing to donate to the museum? Or is that illegal?

Sounds like the Brits need to throw some dough at this museum or lose their rail heritage.

Media Museum? Really? Can’t the “Media” fund their own museum?

Yeah, they need to start charging admission.

Where do I send my money to keep the museum at York open. It is a fantastic place. I trip to the UK wouldn’t be complete with a stop there so I can spend a whole day there. The storage area is worth the time if you see nothing else.

Bye Bye National Media Museum! I have visited the York Museum thrice. It’s absolutely outstanding and each time I contributed significantly to the economy of York - which is an absolutely wonderful city. (-:

In 2003 I spent the greater part of a day in that museum. Everything was world-class and in near perfect condition. That said, why does nearly everything in the UK depend upon government appropriations? Frankly, I have no recall of whether I paid an admission or not. I’d made it a point to travel all the way from California to NE England to see the darned place, and would have paid just about anything they asked to be admitted. This is the bared face of socialism, wherein all decisions come from “the government.” “The Blessed Margaret” had it right. Now they are running out of other people’s money to keep everything going. Private support? How quaint.

Anyone who has a chance to visit this beautiful place should do so ASAP !!!

This museum is not only important to British industrial history, but to the railway history of the entire world. It must not be closed. Certainly charging a modest admission fee (three pounds or about $5 seems very reasonable) would be one way of generating revenue. If the museum generates nearly $900 million annually for the economy of York, perhaps a local sales tax in support of the museum is in order.

When I was in my teens I used to visit York sheds, and over the years watched it grow into the wonderful repository of our industrial heritage it is today. These idiots in London know the cost of everything and the value of nothing!

This is political sabre-rattling by the museum. The government hasn’t even proposed cutting its budget yet.

The NRM is its own worst enemy as it wastes taxpayers money at a staggering rate. Vanity projects have been started and abandoned whilst the overhaul of ‘Flying Scotsman’ has been mis-managed and cost more than $3million so far and is still far from finished - it cost less to build ‘Tornado’ from scratch. It has now spent a fortune repatriating the two A4s from North America and cosmetically restoring them for a series of “photo opportunities” with no guarantee they will be well cared for when they return - Green Bay did look after theirs but not so Montreal.

Almost every UK other enthusiast I speak to seems to be of the same opinion. The NRM is out of control at the moment and needs to be restructured to cut waste and stop the gimmicks. A resonable admission charge would be acceptable but it is current UK government policy that such museums should be free to visit. A charge is made for special events such as the A4 photocalls.

At the end of the day the NRM, or any of the others, will not close their doors. This is mearly the museum trying to create a public opinion and the notoriously left-wing journalists at BBC News never miss an opportunity to “bash” the government!

I was there in 2005 and almost shocked the musuem was free! Would have paid fifty bucks equivalent to get in. That was a groovy Chinese 4-8-4 there and wonder how they moved it over the British loading gauge. And while in York, the curved station platforms are great, good for photos, even of the shunts from Scarborough, bringing in the parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme!
