Building a boxcar.

I found these pictures showing the various stages of boxcar construction.

Interesting, and shades of how some of the older HO scale kits go together.
Some years ago I saw photos of a boxcar building contest that the Delaware and Hudson held for its shop crews. This was back in the days of wood sided cars. I think four crews competed. This might have been in Model Railroader. If I can find the site I’ll mention it here.

I had the same thought when I saw this thread. I think the photo you saw is in Shaughnessy’s big book on the D&H.

ericsp,
Thanks for the link. Very interesting stuff.

You mean you don’t just glue the top to the base and screw on the trucks!?!?!

It was in Trains - Have the mag somewhere, but… Perhaps someone could search the magazine index…

Very interesting article,I do remember seeing one like that in
a magazine quite a few years ago.
It does remind me of building my O scale cars.

$30,000 was the value?

What are thier values today?

I found the article I was thinking of. The title is “Prototype Carbuilding Contest” and it appeared in the August 1977 Model Railroader, page 79. Three D&H teams competed and the winning team took 6 hours, 30 minutes to build the car (52 man-hours). This was a wood sided car; year was 1924. The finished car looks very neatly done, too.

I found a reference to an article in Trains called “How toi Build a Pullman-Standard Boxcar” in the September 1953 issue, page 65, but I do not have that issue.
