I am beginning my planning for building a cog railroad. I was disappointed that the good folks at LGB weren’t able or willing to give me specific construction information:
…What is the greatest grade possible…20% or more???
…How do you design an “easement” for such a steep Grade???
I once had ramps that were 4ft. long and 1ft. high – a 25% grade, and the 2046 locos handled it very well. Easing into the grade with curves seems to facilitate the transition using graduated supports. If a straight transition run is involved, use several very short pieces of track, using shim supports and carefully positioning the rack rail clamps so that the rack stays below the running rails. Mine was a temporary setup, and I was amazed at its reliability given my casual installation . It’s a really great system.
Hi TheHef
something no on has metioned
you will need to change the coupling hooks.
I don’t know the part number but LGB do a special coupling hook for the rack rail set up.
Also just in case you are unaware of it Rack locos are always on the down hill side of the train.
You should be able to go up too a 25% grade with the rack system.
