My very 1st Post, trying to do 10 things at once and trying to put together a P40 Amtrak. I have the Dummy & an Athearn Motor with the flywheel. I am looking for help as to what kind of power trucks I would need and if these would be geared or not, as well as I think the Shanks/Spline or Worm & Shaft, mine are to short. Any HELP or DIRECTION would be Greatly appreciated. I have gone on the Horizon/Athearn site but not sure exactly what I need and hobby shops here do not carry them.
The power trucks from Athearn are part numbers 36540 for the front and 36550 for the rear. Then you’ll need the spline shafts and couplings, plus the mounts for the motor. Adding all this up, you’d probably do better to just buy a powered unit.
You can grab an Athearn RTR P42 in the Northeast Direct Amtrak paint scheme for around $40 at TrainWorld and other places… It might be more economical to buy that and swap in your P40 shell if the paint scheme and details are different.
I just did a quick scan of Athearn’s website, and they don’t list many parts for the AMD103, other than truck sideframes or complete units. The simplest (and possibly cheapest) way to power your engine, might be to buy a complete engine, and swap the shells. Another method, might be to pick up a complete AMD 103 power chassis. Sometimes you can find these, (or engines with damaged body shells) at train shows.
