I own four Athearn hoppers: Norchem, Carlon: An Indian Head Company, Rocor Resins & In-Kettle Compounds, and Temple Gypsum. What building/structure fits these cars? And on a side note, what is Polyurethane and Polyclutch? The Norchem hopper says “Polyurethane NO. L160 Blue Applied to Interior of Car PS 2-74” while the Rocor Resins & IKC says “Polyclutch Lined Applied 6-71 By Lithcote”
I hope anyone can help me. I got kind of tired running these cars around my layout with no building that’s for them.
Three of them appear to be chemical cars, so an injection molding plastic or a plastic coating company would be appropriate. Pretty much any Pike Stuff or tilt up modern factory would work, you might put some small chemical silos outside it.
The gypsum car would go to a plasterboard company or a fertilizer plant.
They are linings, interior “paint” that is desinged not to react with the chemicals, not to contaminate the chemicals and to promote the non-sticking and flow of the chemicals inside the cars.
All but the Gypsum car could logically haul plastic pellets to an extruder or molder making objects of plastic. The gypsum car would be carrying gypsum which is a raw ingredient in plaster and wallboard. The linings also protect the interior of the car against corrosion.
There’s a lot going for modeling bridge traffic (traffic merely passing over the modeled railroad which originated and destined elsewhere) since the logical industries for specialized cars needn’t be modeled. Also, these cars could be used for delivering goods to non-rail-side (nor modeled) industries via team tracks.
Gypsum is a quarried stone. The stone is then ground onsite then shipped out via either truck or rail (or both) for industrial and/or agricultural uses. So, if you had several or many of these cars, you could devote a switch job to an empties-in-loads-out operation - - could get the creative juices flowing!!
