Building Kits, and Car Kits, Questions....

Hey, i was at the internettrains.com website and i dont quite understand the way things are setup…i.e. passenger door covers, passenger car windows 12 per pack, etc…do i have to go through and buy packages of all those different things to make the car or are those mainly part kits or whatever? im so confused, i just want to buy the box and open it and have all the parts there…like a model car. also, are those kits painted or will i need to paint them? And im looking for building kits too, but i cant find them on the internet trains.com site,

BTW my LHS sucks when it comes to model trains. its a hobby lobby and all they have is real real basic stuff and NO KITS! argh, i guess im going to have to wait until christmas when i can go down to kansas city. They have some decent stores i believe. Anyway, can anyone tell me what companies to click on at the internettrains.com for car and loco kits and building kits? BTW HO scale.

Thanks alot. Im new to this

In most cases car kits have everything you’ll need to build the car aside from paint, glue and tools–and paint might not even be necessary for a pre-painted car, aside from weathering or details you might want to add. A few manufacturers make kits without trucks and couplers but most include them. Typically when you buy a kit if it says “undecorated” it isn’t painted–but most model railroad kits come painted for some particular road, which will be on the box. It’s like a model car kit–only less painting is necessary than a model car kit.

Building kits are all over the place, any decent hobby shop will have some–or try www.walthers.com for the Walthers catalog–look under “Structures” and be amazed.

Components are sold because some folks still scratchbuild or kitbash (modify an existing model to resemble something other than that kit) for their own purposes–to build a unique building that isn’t available in model form, or a piece of rolling stock nobody makes a kit of, or just to be imaginative and fun. Scratchbuilding and kitbashing are fun, but build a few kits first to work on your skills.

usually kits come with everything you’ll need to build the basic car. but like what you mentioned were probably parts for broken or lost parts on the car already. those are just replacements. i bought 2 kits on ebay over the weekend and they come with everything. i just need to go out and buy glue this weekend.

alright thanks, and i figured out the structures at internettrains.com and was AMAZED to say the least at what walthers had to offer  thanks again

Those are the parts and pieces for scratch builders or replacement parts if you drop a car and break something.

For internet purchases I buy all my stuff from http://www.internettrains.com. Yes, I agree they need to re-think their website it is confussing and hard to navigate but their prices are by far less than others and for sure Walthers (which I find to be one of the most expensive).

Use the search feature http://www.internettrains.com/nsearch.html and type in boxcar kit, passenger car kit or structure kit. You’ll get a list of only those items matching the search words you typed in.

If you have a specific manufacture you want to buy from use the Shop by Mfg or Product Type button on the left menu.
