Bunk Car History

I am researching a non-revenue car (a former bunk car) that may have been converted from a ca. 1929 automobile car. It is currently in Railroad Heritage Park in Laramie, Wyoming. It was previously used by the Wyoming-Colorado Railroad as a ticket office in Laramie. Based on the ACI panels, the former owner was UP, it was a non-revenue car, and its number was 906778. Current digital images of the car are available at http://www.frhistory.com/snow-train-info.html I would like to know about the history of this car: on what lines did it serve? what was it used for? and when was it converted? Any research suggestions or contacts would be appreciated. We are preparing a National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Snow Train in Railroad Heritage Park of which this car is a part.

Thanks,

I’m sure that the UP Railroad Historical & Technical Society could point you in the right direction.

As to “what lines it served”, freight cars, even automobile cars back in the day, were likely to be used freely anywhere they were needed. You’ll find that it probably wasn’t restricted to any one assignment. If it is in fact an automobile car (one used to transport finished cars), they were probably used over far more lines than auto racks are these days.

I’m glad you used the ACI label to identify the car–that’s an under-utilized historical asset these days.

I fixed your link. It works now.
