Here is a typical Burn mark on a GE Locomotive.
The Question is…Why? What causes them?

I think I saw that locomotive just last week. Isn’t the burn pattern on doors covering the electrical cabinents? As such I would think some sort of electrical fire caused the burns. Several times a years North Kansas City firefighters are called to either the BNSF or NS yards to extinguish a engine fire of some sort.
GE’s must realy suck that bad then.
The last one I personally saw burning was a BNSF SD70MAC in business colors. It looked as if the engine detonated because the Turbo was fully ingulfed and fire was coming out of any of the open compartment doors. Quite a sight, but I think it happens to both GEs and GMs.
The burn marks on the GE in question are where the diesel engine sits. Most likely caused by a fuel system failure. It can happen to both GE and EMD locomotives.
