C&O K3

Can anyone tell me please if this 2-8-2 is the same as the USRA heavy?

Where might I go to for pictures of these engines, a caboose and a water column?

Any assistance appreciated-thanks in advance.

According to the May 87 issue of Mainline Modeler, the C&O K-2 is considered a USRA Copy but the K-3 and K-3a were not due to the longer piston stroke and grate size.

A good soft cover book with pictures of all the K-2, K-3 and K-3a engines was published by PFM in 1978 when they imported the K-3 Crowns. You might look for it at a used book dealer.

You might search the data base at the C&O Historical Society

Sort of. According tot he C&OHS, the K-3’s (1210-1259) were built in 1924 and the K-3a’s (2300-2349) were built in 1925, making them at best clones. Looking at photos of the K-3’s online, they’re not very close to the stock USRA engines. The boiler may be the same, but that’s about it:

Well, the best place for BAD photos is the C&OHS:

They want you to buy prints, so they only have low-res images online.

For good photos of the C&O’s cabooses, go to the Fallen Flags website:
