Nate, they are pretty much the same animals, but with a few internal changes. The most noticeable external change relates to a revised oil cooler. The dash 7’s have a wider hood just ahead of the radiator section. This is caused by the “tilting” of the oil cooler to facilitate better draining of the prime mover, should it go dead in winter weather conditions. That was a problem with the earlier U-series units. Later on, when the microprocessor Dash 8’s came along, the Dash 7’s were rendered obsolete as well. Funny thing, in MY opinion, I think the GE’s were always a better locomotive, but the resale value is a lot lower than a similar EMD unit. I think that “parts availibilty” has something to do with it.

the old dash 7 units were and still are junk. you was lucky to make it in with those units
I thought they looked alike.I wonder how hard it would be to make an ho scale U30C into a C30-7?
Thanks,
Nathan
Not hard at all Nate, just refer to some prototype photos, and an easy Athearn “kitbash” will do. Unless you want a “rivet-for-rivet” EXACT model, the Athearn U-series will be a good starting point. Consult a “Walthers” catalog for the various parts needed. As I said earlier, there is a bulge in both sides of the hood just ahead of the radiator area, and with units built after about 1980, or so, a much larger exhaust stack. This was a muffler to comply with government regs. I would recommend that you pick up a copy of Kalmbachs “Contemporary Diesel Spotters Guide” and that will help you out with not only THIS project, but many to come. Of course, if you are trying to model a specific unit, then you will want to refer to prototype photos. I have built my entire Grand Trunk Western fleet by just this practice. Over 20 engines that I have modeled, I have a personal connection to them. ( either I have operated them, or ridden in then). It helps to have photos too, when modeling a specific unit.

I will have to try it !!!
Thanks Todd !!!

The C30-7 has the larger radiator of the U33 and U36 series which overhags the sides. The radiator on the U30C is way smaller and doesn’t. If you look at the so called bulge or step on the C30-7 it is actually an extension of the widening under the radiators found on he U30 series.
Hey Todd C.
Since you have had some practice would you want to help me build a C30-7 model ?
Thanks,
Nathan
