This is good news but would not have happened had not the drilling boom happened.

I rode the line between Chicago & Brookings, SD in the late 1940s and most of the 1950s, also from Rapids City to Brookings, SD in 1958. We never thought the track was bad or unusual. I do rememebr the parlor car swaying some between Rochester and Mankato, MN.

Why is CP committing itself to this project if it plans to shed the line west of Minnesota anyway?

Official Guide, Sept-'61, shows CNW “Rochester 400” lve. Winona 5:10pm, arv. Mankato 8:15pm–134 mi., with 5 stops=43 mph (EB was 3hr20min.) Must have been quite a ride on 90 lb. rail! Eastern end traverses steep ravines and many streams–was severely damaged by floods a few years ago. Most current traffic is 134T grain hoppers–glad to see that the new(?) CPR considers
this neglected line now important.
