As the subject suggets, this message is directed to Canadian subscribers.
I recently received a renewal certificate in the mail for Model Railroader. The rates quoted are $47.50 for 1 year, $90.25 for 2 years and $130.15 for 3 years.
On Friday night our group had our operating session and one of the members said that somone he knows picked up a copy of Model Railroader in Chapters. Inside, there was a coupon for a 1 year subscription for $39.99 CDN. He told us that these coupons have never appeared in copies of the magazine sent to hobby stores. If this is accurate, it means that it’s a better deal than I was offered in the mailer I received.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen these coupons in magazines or what kind of deal they have been offered for new or renewal subscriptions. I’d like to renew but obviously I’d like to get the best deal available. Thanks.
I bought my first copy of MR yesterday at Wal Mart, and there are several cupons it to subscribe for $29.95/yr This is better than $39.95/yr on the internet. Although I live in the states, I hope this helps. Mike
“The rates quoted are $47.50 for 1 year, $90.25 for 2 years and $130.15 for 3 years”. Is this $ or CDN$? Check your notice.
I got my first subscription to MR from a school fundraising deal (seem to recall it was 60% off but can not really remember). Then after the 3 years, I also got a renewal notice. I did the math, as they wanted it in US$, and compared it to buying at the newsstand price. There were no savings at that time, so I declined to renew.
I will have to check out the Chapters version next time I am in , our nearest Chapters, and see what “falls out”. IF there was a reasonable savings by subscribing, I would do it again, but as it stands right now, not me.
Currently I get Central Hobbies in to hold RMC and Canadian Railway Modeller for me, they then ship them up every 4-5 months (thanks Hal). MR I buy if I see any articles that I find of interest, which is most months.
Here in Australia, the magazine is sold for $A9.95 and the current exchange rate it should be about $A7 I’m getting a three year subscription which will cost me $A181.72 a saving of about $A197 over the three years!. I don’t know why I have to pay 9.95 for the mag, when it shouldn’t be that much.
Don’t forget, GST is included in the Canadian rate. Something the cover price doesn’t reflect until you get to the cash register. And you’ll save the PST… The GST and PST could equal the exchange rate at this time, or be close to it.
Which works out to about $4.29 an issue, all taxes included. That’s about $4 less than what you’d pay in Ontario at a hobby shop or Chapters. The cover price doesn’t reflect the exchange rates at this time. There was a time, way back, that the hobby shops broke even or lost money on magazines they imported from the US due to the exchange, because they were sold in CDN funds at the (US) cover price.
