Check with the folks at White River Productions, I think they took over most of the Carstens stuff.

I don’t recall a box car but there certainly may have been one. I DO recall a line of Athearn passenger cars painted for Colonel Carsten’s Shows:

I don’t know if Athearn actually did the painting or if it was a custom-run like Bev-Bel used to do.
Robins Rails did a Roundhouse brand, fifty-foot box car lettered for Carstens Publishing:

It looks like there were a couple, but I do not know the answers to either one of your questions.
The Railroad Model Craftsman car looks like Athearn. Not so sure on the Flying Models car.

Sorry, but I do not know when any of these were made. The only one I actually own is the Athearn Observation Car.

There is one for sale on Ebay, in a sealed box so you can’t actually see the car.
I don’t remember BB Athearn being sealed in plastic, but maybe it was.

The regular line was not.
I still remember how upset a hobby shop owner was when a customer’s kid started switch parts around between the boxes. Threw them out and “don’t come back”.

The Hobby Hound in South Fort Myers (20+ years ago) had a plastic wrapping machine and sealed all the kits that did not come factory sealed.
This could be somthing like that, maybe?

I had a short article published in RMC back in 1983 and used part of the money to buy a yellow and black “Carstens Publications” O scale tank car kit. It was made by Weaver I believe.
I think I still have a “Col. Hal Carstens for President” poster from about the same time around here somewhere…
I also have an Athearn HO kit tucked away of a blue heavyweight observation car lettered for Model Railroader, but I don’t recall right now what it was for - 50th anniversary of MR (1985) perhaps?
I do not think I have ever seen the Model Railroader observation car.

Someone with the Standard Guide to Athearn Model Trains can check for the MR observation.
Roger Huber said a couple of years ago that AHM/Rivarossi made a solid-color observation as a RMC ‘business car’ – he didn’t know the original color because he only ever saw a B&W photo…
Nice collection of the Carsten’s cars. There was also a passenger coach made by ECW using their Osgood-Bradley kit painted as such.
I believe there was also a set of decals for those wanting a different car.
There have been numerous anniversary cars done for Model Railroader and TRAINS but I can’t recall any observation cars.
