This past Monday I found myself driving through a small town in southeastern North Carolina, Chadbourne. In the center of town, I crossed what was listed on the state map as an east/west CSX line (with a junction from the south with what appeared to be a virtually abandoned line). I found what appeared to be a train museum with several switch engines and some various rolling stock. A few blocks away I saw a sign “1910 ACL Station” pointing to the west. When I got home I looked in guide books and the museum section in the latest Trains Magazine, but was unable to find anything about it. Can anyone provide some information about the museum there and the train station?
OK, I did my own research. From my on-line inquiries, I found that I had apparently come across the home base of the Carolina Southern Railroad, a 76.5 mile short line that operates between Whiteville, NC and Mullins, S.C. and also between Chadbourne, NC and Conway, SC. According to an entry in the ncrailways.net website, the railroad has 11 locomotives and employs 35 people. Does anyone know anything about my other question, information about the 1910 ACL train station in Chadbourne?
Was in Whiteville NC about a year ago and the train does not run their anymore the track was rusty and trees were down on the tracks and by the looks they been down for a long time.
