Chicago Question

On return from a bus tour to Washington DC and NYC we came into Chicago on I80/90/94 on the N side of the I there is a small rail yard that has maroon & gold box type units what RR or company owns them. This was before we went by US cellular Field going West. Eugene H

80, 90, and 94 are never together in the Chicago area (combinations of any two of these can be seen in Chicago or northwestern Indiana, but never all three), so more information is needed. Where did you come from? Any idea which of these Interstates you came into town on?

This would be 80/90 Eugene H

Going by cellular field would put him on the Dan Ryan but I don’t know how to interpret maroon and gold box type units so I would speculate Wiscon Central on the IC if any engines are still around or Chicago Short Line thatuses that combo on its diesels.

I’m going to guess that his bus tour came into the Chicago area on the Indiana Toll Road and the Skyway. This is I-90 from the Indiana-Ohio state line and I-80 shares this route until the junction with I-94 at Burns Harbor. Possibilities include Kirk Yard in Gary (possible ex-DMIR power), South Shore Line on the East Chicago bypass, and Chicago Short Line in East Side (a difficult view from the Skyway).

It depends on the bus company. Some use I94 to not pay the toll. That would go past NS 103d st yard and a small yard around Stony Island then there is the old Rock Island commuter yard around 85th st.
