I was wondering if trains were used much these days in moving a circus from one town to another if they were ever in past years?
Quite frequently. Ringling Brothers has a Red train and Blue train the criss cross the country, pretty much endlessly.

The James E. Strates show also has a train that runs during their season. I was told by a NS engineer that he hates running it and having it on his line due to reasons I can’t really say here.
BTW, the JES train is leaving the Twin Cities (Winston-Salem) for Augusta next week. I don’t know the schedule of the train departing Winston-Salem.

You’re splitting hairs in this day and age. But, yes, Strates is a carnival with all the set up of a circus except for the big tent and the animals; as an extraordinary train, it is extraordinary and quailifies right next to the circus trains here. Ringling Bros., Barnum and Baily has two complete trains, Red and Blue distinguished by the color of the lettering and not the color of the cars. One does the west one year and the east the following in general terms but not unusual to see that both will be in the same state if not the same time then a few weeks or months apart. I don’t believe there are any other such trains as these three in the US today.
