NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Amtrak train was involved in two separate accidents Wednesday. In the second accident, two people were killed.
The southbound train hit a car in south McComb, Miss., and sent the car’s 19-year-old driver to a hospital.
The train then continued south, and after it crossed into Louisiana, it hit another car near the town of Independence. Dennis Pevey, the public information officer for Tangipahoa Parish, told WDSU NewsChannel 6 the car was traveling east on Anderson Road when the collision happened. Pevey said that witnesses heard the train blowing its whistle, but the car did not stop. Pevey said the train pushed the car about 285 feet before it came to a stop. Two people inside the car were declared dead at the scene.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliarri said none of the 130 passengers and crew on the train was injured.
