hello, i’m new here and my englisch is’nt that good but i try.

i’m living in belgium and i’m making a modelrailroad layout of an american city for a contest on oktober 25 and 26. whe have to make a working layout in HO on 8.073 square feet (it’s a mini layout contest). So my question is that i’m looking for a large city where the Union Pacific and the BNSF meet, because this is my main theme for the layout.

As far as big American cities where the UP and BNSF meet, there are plenty of places. You might want to look at system maps for both the UP and BNSF and see where they might meet. Here in Illinois, the UP and BNSF cross over one another at grade, in a small town called Rochelle.

You can look up some other places, but I am sure that the members here will be full of info.

Kansas City, Kansas

here in the midwest you have the Omaha Council Bluffs area Fremont nebraska where they cross each other at grade and Sioux City Iowa There is Gtand Island Nebraska where they use to cross at grade but now the BNSF crosses in an overhead bridge Hopes this helps Welcome to the forum Larry

  1. Get a map of the U.S. of A

  2. Find Chicago, Illinois

  3. Draw a line south to New Orleans, Louisiana

  4. West to Houston, Texas

  5. North to Dallas, Texas

  6. West to Los Angeles, California

  7. North to Oakland, California

  8. Continue north from Oakland to Portland, Oregon, then keep going north to Seattle, Washington

  9. Then draw southeast to Denver, Colorado

  10. Then northeast to Minneapolis, Minnisota and on to Duluth, Minnisota

  11. Then draw southeast back to Chicago

Any major city within those lines (except for Las Vegas, Nevada) is served by both the BNSF and the UP.

Now, 20 years ago, that question would have been more of a challenge (Although you’d have to pick one of the BNSF predecessors, say ATSF).

Omaha, Grand Island, NE, St Louis, MO, Denver, CO, Kansas City, MO, Ft Worth, TX, houston, TX, E Paso, TX, Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR, Tacoma, WA, Seattle , WA, Wichita, KS, Lincoln, NE, Memphis, TN.

There are also hundreds of smaller towns where they cross.

Are you looking for a place where BNSF and UP run over the same tracks or where they have separate lines that cross?

BNSF and UP interchange in Minneapolis (BNSF’s big Northtown Yard is in Minneapolis and UP’s smaller Hoffman Yard is in St. Paul).

They also interchange in Superior/Duluth, but UP doesn’t have much trackage of its own there (they reach Superior on BNSF trackage rights). So perhaps the UP’s Itasca Yard on the southeast side of Superior, Wisconsin might be an idea. BNSF’s yard is northwest of there in Superior, near Tower Avenue.

BNSF, UP and CP all traverse between Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota on BNSF’s former Northern Pacific main in the area of Minnesota Commercial Railway’s Midway Yard, located on Energy Park Drive just a 1/4 mile east of Highway 280.

It depends a little on what kind of scenery you want to model - palm trees and dry river beds of L.A., or green hills and blue waters of Minneapolis-St.Paul.?? Hey, downtown Minneapolis is located on a waterfall in the Mississippi River, if you want some interesting scenery…or you could do St.Paul with a stern-wheel steamboat in the river next to the tracks if you’re a Mark Twain / Huck Finn kinda guy. [:)]

they are all nice sugestions, butt like i told in the beginning it’s a 8,073 square feet layout ( it’s in europe masseurments 1 meter 45 on 25 centimeter and 1 meter 20 on 25 centimeter put togheter in L shape ) so im thingking that something like a waterfall is a little bit over the edge.

I now that there is a nice liftbridge in st. Paul butt it’s to big for my layout.
