I have a friend that’s into N scale that should have gone with a larger, not so fragile scale. This guy breaks something off of something every time he picks something up-and guess who he calls to do his repairs… Every time I stop by to check in on him he’s got a shoe box full of broken engines or rolling stock that he’s either droped or picked up too roughly and broken for me to have to fix. It’s as if he just doesn’t get the message.
Do any of you folks know anyone like this ?..

Yeah, me! I’m constantly breaking off steps and gluing them back on!
part of the hobby is learning to fix ones own breakage, maybe have him build a “RIP” track, and help him to learn to do his own repairs, it’s that or “O” gauge…lol
Suggest that he switch to G-scale – [:D]
I agree with gentlegiant, help him learn how to fix his own models.
I can even break G scale.[D)][(-D] Haven’t managed to break the 7 1/2" gauge…yet! Oh…wait a minute. I did break a handrail off of my loco…
I suggest you hand him a list of your charges for certain repairs. You come over to visit and run trains, not repair his broken items. Have him give you a small payment for the work you do.
[V] A friend of mine does not respect trains at all. When he is at my house and Im using my dads layout he always gives my track “bad iron” once he actually threw my WM bl-2 on to the ground!!!
I do charge him now because it’s gotten to be a constant thing with him, but it doesn’t do any good, and makes me feel kind of bad because he’s one of those helpless types that has no mechanical or problem solving abilities what so ever…
I’ve tried to tell him that in order to be a true model railroader you have to be able to do a lot for yourself, but he ignores me and goes right on like he has for almost two years now. I don’t know if even the real thing would stand a chance with this guy…[:(]

It’s a sad fact that there are people out there that find model railroading very silly and boring, and all they care to do is destroy layouts and rolling stock any way they can.
My sister and brother-in-law use to live near a park in Bryan Texas that had a model railroad club. One night, some kids broke into the building and totally destroyed everything in it in hopes of driving the railroaders away because they simply didn’t like trains. Of course they were eventually identified and charged for what they’d done, and the model railroad club rebuilt the layout and bought new train items-and a much stronger door to the building…
When I was a kid, I had a friend named Greg that was a very destructive little so in so.
If he walked in your house and you had your train set up on the floor and were running it, he’d haul off and kick it across the room if you wouldn’t turn it off and go do what he wanted to do-never mind what you might do to him or him having to pay for it.

Although not quite the same, I had a friend with a layout who asked me several times to make models for him. At the time I was working full time (since retired), and he was already retired.
“Hey Bob, kitba***his N scale ship into an HO scale freighter for me”. Here’s a Walthers Russell snow plow, make it into a shorter Canadian one like you’ve done.", etc. He wouldnt just come out and ask me so I could offer excuses, he’d show up at my door with the models in hand. I didn’t have much if any interest in doing hobby work for others, so I just put the models in the closet. Everytime he would ask me, I’d tell him I was too busy on my own projects to do anything for him. I eventually gave him back his models using the same reason.
I was just going through my stash of kits this morning and came across a small kit of his to make a small section house out of styrene. I had forgotten all about it. I imagine he has too, so now it’s mine!
I’ve had a few others ask me to make models for them too. I’ll admit I probably am better at it than they are, but I only had so much free time when I was working, and I took their requests as flattery but did not appreciate the possible loss of my free time.
Nowadays I just make excuses right off the bat - “Can’t ,I’m too busy”. And if they persist, off the models go into the closet until they get the hint. I don’t mind helping others, but doing their modeling is something different.
I’d suggest doing the same.

That really sucks. I can’t beleive sombody would do that a club layout. I know I got pissed when I heard sombody
broke into that museum in Germany (Was It Marklin?) and stole some of their really old stuff. I heard they caught the guys and
recovered some of the trains. I’ve been 6’3" 240lbs. since I was about 14. NOBODY kicked my trains!

Thanks Bob. I appreciate the suggestion. The day will soon come when I will tell this guy that I don’t have time anymore and it won’t be an excuse but an actual fact. The sad thing is that he’s 37 years old and can’t even change the oil in his own car. His mom was telling me that he was telling her that if I ever stop coming around that it will be the end of his model railro
