Last Sunday’s (8-26) edition of the kenosha News had an ad by CN. In it was a photo of a two people on ATV’s riding along side a double-track main line with a CN train approaching them from behind. The text headline in the ad read, “Don’t put your life on our line”. Below that was more text: “This season, prevent a senseless tragedy by steering clear of train tracks. Not only is riding an ATV on a railroad’s right of way illegal, you can’t always see or hear a train coming.” Then "All aboard for safety. CN North America’s Railroad.
I mention this because not only have I never seen a safety ad by any railroad, I was surprised to see it in our little local rag. Good idea, though.
Locally MARC has been having a radio advertising campaign to stay off the tracks. I don’t get the paper so I don’t know if there is a corresponding print campaign.
The “LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE” safety campaign has been running for years up here in Canada. T.V. adds, Bus shelter posters and on and on. At public events the Rail companies have Rail Police handing out all sorts of safety things for the kids like colouring books, whistles, safety stickers and cardboard train kits to be made.
I often wonder how effective it has been. The fact they carry on with it with such vigour may speak for itself.[^o)]
