CN Train derails near homes in Quebec town

Train derails near homes in Quebec town#### Last Updated: Sunday, January 7, 2007 | 9:05 AM ET##### CBC News

Twenty-four rail cars went off the track in the Quebec town of Montmagny early Sunday morning, in the heart of a residential neighbourhood.

There have been no reported injuries.

The derailment occurred at 1:30 a.m. ET as a CN train was heading eastbound from Toronto for Dartmouth, N.S.

CN Rail says 72 of the cars were loaded with products ranging from agricultural goods to new vehicles, but no hazardous materials were aboard.

Transportation Safety Board officials are now on the scene, but for the time being, the cause of the derailment is uncertain.

Heavy equipment is removing some of the twisted wreckage. Video footage shows a badly damaged white van near a couple of the derailed cars.

It’s the second time in just under two years that rail cars have gone off the track in the town of Montmagny, about 60 kilometres east of Quebec City.

Derailments are so common with CN now that forum members don’t even bother to post to these topics anymore. [zzz] [:)]

If it hadn’t been, “in the heart of a residential neighbourhood,” would it even have been reported by CBC?

Has anyone suggested a connection (neighborhood kids putting rocks on the track…)?

Just another half-baked effort by another technologically challenged media (fill in noun of choice).

Canadian National is getting to be worse than Amtrak with derailments. LOL

Yes, CBC reported the Fraser Canyon one as well, not near (or in) a town.

There was not a derailment in the Fraser canyon, it was the Thompson. News reports!!

Barry, if you check out the links in my post on the canyon derailment, both CBC and Global were reporting it in the Fraser Canyon. It was not until someone noted it was north of Lytton that it became clear it was in the Thompson.

Thanks for reading the news reports in the initial post on this and clarifying it here for us.

I wasn’t trying to be critical of you, but the news media, they quite often make mistakes in their reporting. The CBC seems on a bent on reporting CN accidents, Some very minor. This accident ( the BC one) could have just as easily been CP and probably would not have been reported although the pictures were pretty dramatic. I especilly appreciate first hand reports like those from the crew members, thank heavens they were OK.

Barry

No problems. It is a big deal here in BC when something bad happens on CN, due I think to the political issues surrounding the BC Rail sale to CN. One of the CN crew members was on the local radio and basicly said it was just one of those things that happens, comes with the job.

Check the Canyon post for some on-the-scene photos [;)]
