Seems to me sliding coal leaves bare steel streaked with fresh rust. Your opinion, please? Thank you.

I think that this photo was originally posted on the Model Railroader Forum by CudaKen which I grabbed as a reference for a future weathering project.

Hi, also shown in the photo by Bear - as well as chemical corrosion causing rust, abrasive materials will also wear away the Steel Plates of the Hopper Chutes.
This is referred to as ‘Erosive’ damage and is physical wear due to movement of abrasive particles scraping away the material.
Eventually this leads to a ‘delamination’ of the Plates, almost in layers and might be a good modeling project to tackle.
