This is my first but not last post.
I have a question. I don’t know if any of you follow modelers have received mailngs from Hawthorne Village of thier specialized offerings. I live in Oklahoma and last year I purchashed thier offering of the Sooner Express. I know that these are Bachman models that are customized to what the individual orders. I currently am receiving the 50th anniversery Corvette collection.
I just received notice of the top 10 Railroad passenger trains. They are offering the locomotives only with a display stand. The locos are fully functional.
The question I have is that anyone out there purchased any products from Hawthorne Village? Also if so are you satisfied, I am but they seem a little pricey. I would like any and all response.
There are many catalog dealers like this who offer what they call “collectables” that are usually highly overpriced items. Whether these items will really be collectables depends on who might be looking for one in the future and whether or not they have the money, and you find out about them. Slim chance, in my opiniion.
I’ve looked at the offerings of Hawthorne Village and the like and see an overpriced, under-detailed model that I’m not really interested in. It may be collectable to those who are not “collectors” in the hobby, but knowledgeable folk will probably steer clear of them. Collect stuff that YOU are interested in collecting, not stuff someone else tells you is collectable.
It can be worthwhile to pick up this sort of “collectable” at garage sales, thrift stores or estate sales, where they can be had for a dollar or less, as cheap and easy “place-holders” for starting layouts, around-the-Christmas-tree dioramas, or inexpensive buildings to put on your nephew’s toy-train layout. Ceramic buildings of approximately scale sizes can be useful for this sort of thing as well…
