Come On Guys, Give Me A Break!

I can agree with that! I may grow old, but I’ll NEVER GROW UP!!! [;)][:)][:D][^]

Heck, I play with toys for a living! [8)]

Things will get better as soon as the immature teens like me get back to school, but whos to say i wont post from school…i did it quite alot last year.

Well I am your guilty party on the dust bunnies, but you know, the thread was also getting a little heated, sometimes a little diversion is good, relaxing and plain fun. I laughed pretty hard that day.

As for the drifting, what do you call this thread doing. If I go to a train show, I may talk trains, but I may end up meeting someone that had a mutual friend, without moving off topic how do you expect to build a freindship, see what people are about?

Also asking where someone lives, I am again guilty being asked that, I replied, I was always taught it was rude to ignore people.

Everyone needs to lighten up and enjoy everything about this forum. I feel like I am around a great bunch of people willing to share, argue, laugh or what ever. We are all human, not some dictionary about trains and train only topics. Some people out there, this may be their only method of contact with others, be that good or bad.

Okay off to find some interesting topics [}:)]

Wow, I’ve started an uprising. Is this a bad thing?[:D]

Time to move on.

You make good posts, Adam. Don’t worry about it. I’'m a teacher, so let me be the first to say…get back to your lessons, young man!

No I think you created some thought provoking discussion. I like the diversions. If you think about not every topic is going to appeal to everyone. I don’t do DCC (yet) and so with that I tend to skip those. Same can be said of this thread.

I for one will be glad school starts, I will have the whole house to myself, train videos blarring, railfanning without having to drag the kid when he doesn’t want to go anywhere, now that I think about it, it’s sort of my summer vacation [:D]

from now on im sticking to posts about just plain trains!!! No more flamming for me whew!!! to much of that stuff lately

First of all, Bergie has handled problem threads well.

I’ve been involved in some heated discussions when I feel things totally inappropriate for this forum are being posted. Some of these posts are intentionally done to advance controversial agendas and cause a stink. I try to be a nice guy online (and in person) but there are some things worth defending. From now on, I’ll notify Bergie myself, he’s got a good track record… In the past I didn’t know how to contact him so I argued the facts myself.

I thought the dust bunnies were great! They provided a necessary diversion from a topic that was about out of hand. I think they should pop up a bit more often!

Slightly more “on-topic”: It’s not just some teens that have been a bit inciteful - there have been a few oldsters, too. That being said, perhaps all of us should try to be a bit more open-minded and supportive, and a little less irritable and stuffy.

It’s all about having fun, and my idea of fun and yours may not be the same. Does that make any of us wrong? If you don’t like the topic, find another one to read.

And USPSCSX, why would you (or anyone) “leave” because of a few lousy posts out of the bazillions that are here? You have lots of good things to say!

Most of us like the diversity of ideas, and we shouldn’t get down over a few that go south.

Whew, I guess I ponied up at least 6 cents worth here - sorry!

Someone please define “flaming” for me. It seems that anytime someone disagrees
with someone and doesn’t sugar-coat it, they are accused of flaming.
Sometimes, people can be a little thin-skinned on forums.
I work in construction and when we disagree, it’s pretty ugly[B)]… but, we know how to take it.

I have not seen any real flaming since our old friend Al was on his rampage. I do see
some strong opinions, but that’s part of debating an issue.

This topic proves a point. That the word “flaming” gets thrown out there too
easily. Even the topic about Daniel’s Ebay account being suspended wasn’t full of flaming.
I can see how he might have took it that way, but it was mostly people upset about him
not telling the whole story. I thought it was a little embarassing for him, but it was not
flaming by my definition. And I began to feel real bad for him… not because he was flamed,
but because he’s been around and contributes to the forum. And with one topic, it kind of went
south for him.

Us members that have been around awhile have seen some ugly times, but we get past them
and move on. I still feel bad about mine and Dougal’s little run in and that was probably two years
ago. That caused a big rukus that went on for days and days, but we all got past it… at least I hope
we did[:)].

We all need to get along because we all have something to say, or else we wouldn’t be here. But,
just like anywhere else, it’s highly unlikely that everyone will agree on everything. A lot of you are not
going to agree with me on this. But as long as you don’t bring my Mama into, I probably won’t
take it as being flamed. [;)] Good luck, Dave

Edit: Corrected my incorrect spelling of “flaming”

From Webster: flaming
(adjective) 1 : resembling or suggesting a flame in color, brilliance, or wavy outline < flaming red hair>; 2 : being on fire : BLAZING ; 3 : INTENSE , PASSIONATE < flaming youth>; 4 – used as an intensive

flam
(noun) : a drumbeat of two strokes of which the first is a very quick grace note

Maybe Flamming is like marching to a different drummer?

Actually I finished all my work before I would go to the school library and post, I am a good student and my teachers had no problem with letting me go to the library to read and post on the forums. The only time I posted while I was doing work was when I was doing my casey jones project and I had a question I couldn’t find the answer to and sure enough within 5 minutes I had my answer And I finished my project.

Thanks Rotoranch,
Not exactly what I was looking for, but thanks all the same. Dave

I know…it wasn’t exactly what I’d hoped to find, either. It’s all the Webster site had. [:)]

Flaming, as far as the internet is concerned, is could be considered giving someone hell, I guess. Possibly akin to libel, or slander?

Maybe someone has a better definition?

Rotor

I’m glad to hear you’re a good student. I’m a resource English and Science teacher, so the kids I teach have some trouble making good grades.

I believe the drum rudiment they are talking about is a flam. It really has nothing to do with flames but i guess it uses the same verb. Something of that sort.

Here is what answer.com has under flaming/technology:

Flaming is the performance “art” of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting, usually in the social context of a discussion board (usually on the Internet). Such messages are called flames, and are often posted in response to flamebait. Flaming is one of a class of economic problems known as The Tragedy of the Commons, when a group holds a resource (in this case, communal attention), but each of the individual members has an incentive to overuse it.

Although the trading of insults is as old as time itself, flaming on the Internet started in the Usenet hierarchies. A flame may have elements of a normal message, but is distinguished by its intent. A flame is typically not intended to be constructive, to further clarify a discussion, or to persuade other people. The motive for flaming is often not dialectic, but rather social or psychological. Sometimes, flamers are attempting to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority. Occasionally, flamers wi***o upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they are trolls. Most often however, flames are angry or insulting messages transmitted by people who have strong feelings about a subject. Occasionally a flame can also be used as a zenslap. Finally, some consider flaming to be a great way to let off steam, though the receiving party may be less than pleased.

Similarly, a normal, non-flame message may have elements of a flame – it may be hostile, for example – but it is not a

I have actually been thinking of being a teacher when I grow up…yup thats right I spend 11 years in school and I am thinking about spending an extra 4 after my 12th year and then spending another 15-20 years teaching and most likely learning more.

Me either. I haven’t seen it. I got tired of the senseless posts on here about a week ago that just wouldn’t end. It got me flustered, so I left. That was a mistake, and I’m back to stay this time. I never contributed to any of that, and won’t. We don’t need it. In fact, this is the first and last I’ll post on this thread, because I wanted yall to know for sure it was me, and I want to give my two cents.

David…that’s exactly what I was looking for, but couldn’t put into words. Great site, thanks for the link! I’m gonna put that in my favorites!

It’s a little more up to date than Websters!
