Conrail in the Harrisburg, PA and surrounding areas 1976 to 1990's

In the 1970’s to the 1990’s, our group of rail fans visited Harrisburg and the surrounding areas including Rockville Tower, Enola, Cove and the lower area on the P&E. We met with Harrisburg resident Ollie Wagner and a few others during our visits. Some of my photos were taken with an Eastman-Kodak 35mm movie film offered by RGB from California. The slides have faded badly and the negative strips that came with the slides have not aged very well also. I have tried to color correct as much as I can, so I apologize for the quality.

My trip on the former PRR and Penn Central Middle Division, now Conrail, starts in the Harrisburg station. Amtrak also used the station, so a variety of trains are seen.

West Fairview, PA
I spent a day in September 1979 in the Harrisburg area wanting to photograph the last days of the GG-1’s. However, it rained all day and I had heard the rain total was around an inch! I did go to West Fairview, PA for several hours and then headed to the station. Yes, I did get wet and the flash failed later that afternoon at the station, but it was well worth it! I did repair the flash at Ollie’s house later that day.

Cove was once a location for the track water pans in the steam era. The water would be scooped up into the tenders which meant the steam locomotives on the passenger trains did not have to stop at the water tanks to fill their tenders.

The only things left from that era were concrete piers.

I have to tell the funny story about Snuffy - he hated snakes and on this trip I bought one of my kids rubber black snakes. The previous night I placed it by his tripod on the concrete pad. A short while later, he was by his tripod and I shouted “Snake!”. He ran like heck, but later yelled at all of us! He did not think it was funny at the time, but laughed and found it to be funny later…

Great work! What a time capsule!

I also started another one from Lewistown to Altoona. Been in those places many times in the CR era. A few more pix to post. If you check it out, I hope you like that also.

I have been taking pix since 1970, so I do have thousands to choose from on many topics, including early Amtrak in New Jersey

Will do!

Wow, that is a whole bunch of good looking locos.

Nice photos. :+1:

Rich

The National Limited was running in 1986?

Kevin

That is what I was told by one of the professional railroaders in our group. However, perhaps the trains were so common that they kept referring to them with the same train number and name. They kept calling train #30 & #31.

From everything I’ve heard, the National Limited ended service in 1979.

Kevin

I checked my July 1979 Amtrak timetable and the National Limited was still listed. Further investigation shows it was discontinued in October 1979.

Now, why did my Conrail employee friends still refer to trains 30 & #31 as The National Limited??? This was in the 1980’s!

I wonder what train it really was?

Train #40 & #41 was still the Broadway Limited and the Pennsylvanian was running in the late 1970’s. I photographed the Pennsylvanian at Bennington Interlocking in August 1977.

Thanks for the time trip!

Lets see…Amtrak E’s, towers, Mail Pouch barns, fallen flag cars in Enola, GG1’s and freight electrics…so many changes.

Ed

Yes…imagine what those guys in the steam age would think about the stuff we saw!

I get bored with today’s railroads…the diesels almost all look the same!

When our group camped out at Sand Patch in the late 1970s to around 1992, these was variety of diesel models and paint schemes. When CSX began, we saw many engines from SCL, Clinchfield, and others along with remnant paint schemes from the B&O, C&O and Western Maryland. But, CSX did have variants of their paint schemes also. Reminded me of the early days of Conrail! Who would have ever think we’d see CNJ on the Horseshoe Curve!

Ain’t that the truth. Boring is the right word.

Rich

The rail scene in Richmond VA was exactly the same with CSX when we moved here in 1987. I wasn’t a railfan at the time but it was pretty obvious CSX wasn’t in any great rush to repaint their (for lack of a better term) heritage locomotives. UNTIL they absorbed the RF&P in 1991, they really had to fight to get that one. The RF&P locomotives didn’t lose their blue and gray paint schemes but the RF&P heralds disappeared seemingly overnight! I think it was out of spite, many of those CSX heritage locomotives still had their original paint and markings in '91.

Most of the engines had CSXT and a new number, but still retained the Chessie paint, or the SCL paint…it was a great time to see the different paint schemes.

Although, the gray Stealth scheme left a lot to be desired!

Thank goodness you took all those photos and thank you for sharing.
Also, good to see you and your friends enjoying a Railfan holiday.
Paul.

It is very important to document history, even if it is a ‘tongue in cheek moment’ ! 40 years later it is great to see stuff like that - memories!
