Unfortunately, while “Beaux-Arts” remained a viable, though out-dated architectural style by the 1908 construction of the Schenectady depot, today’s new “transit hub” designs lack a valid design vernacular, paying lip-service to the past with a certain roofline aspect or hint of a clocktower, built using cheap split block and some brick veneer touches. Compare with the Sante Fe’s Oklahoma City art deco relic, not torn down and easily (and compartively cheaply) restorable.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
Finally! Now what we need is a early morning train down to New York City that arrives before lunch, or even better brunch! We had one back in the 1980s in the days of the RTL Turbos and most certainly need it today.
Also a late evening train from NYC would be a great benefit, allowing people in downtown to make day trips to and from Schenectady.
Spent a long and tedious Lake Shore delay on the platform at Schenectady last June. Didn’t venture into the station, but the platforms could sure use an overhaul. (Fortunately the weather was nice.) Glad to hear there’s a new facility in the works.
Good news. The old station was a classic. This will help with Schenectady downtown’s rebirth.
Fine architecture, including Beaux-Arts, is never out of style. I hope the design will be appreciably replicated on the new station.
@WILLIAM D HAYS from MONTANA
we are no fans of Cuomo, but your comment is stupid… How would fracking pay for a station? They frack like crazy in PA, OH, WV, ND and TX and maybe you can point out how well developed stations and passenger rail are in those states?
Note the money was appropriated YEARS ago and they can’t seem to manage a project to spend it.
If Gov. “Andy-the-Panderer” Cuomo would allow “fracking”, the funding would be no problem. Wott’a loon!
William D Hays, go frack yourself; you’re just as loony as the Goose.
Anyone who talks about fracking should have no trouble with fracking in their backyard.
The moderators at Trains Newswire better call th’hook. This story somehow sideswiped and then got derailed by everybody. From ‘fracking’ to Cuomo ? !
Which doesn’t make sense to me.
Where is the Gooose?? Maybe the Troll is hibernating in his hole. Maybe we all will be lucky and won’t hear from him for a while!!!
Yes Vasyl, He watching Faux Noise while occupying that hole and you know what hole I’m talking about.
I’ve got a suggestion’ how about including a localized map or photo of the subject the article speaks about. We were at the Schenectady Station during a layover while awaiting the Ethan Allen train 2 years ago. The condition of the passageways to the tracks were deplorable. Serious leakage problems with rivulets of rust running down the walls.
Will be nice to have a decent depot in Schenectady again. Schenectady is the only city in the NYS Capital region with a station downtown – well except for Rensselaer, across the Hudson River from Albany – which is the station for Albany…
What about an intermodal facility that would also serve the intercity bus lines. Both Greyhound and Trailways serve the city. Syracuse and Utica have intermodal facilities that seem to work quite well. The Schenectady bus station is a few blocks from the present train station, and has received an exterior facelift that resembles a Dairy Queen. In addition, road work and changes in traffic patterns have made it difficult for the busses to serve the station. There is very little parking for customers, and bus time can be a traffic nightmare. You would think the politicians in the city would want to make public transportation more attractive.
Vasyl and Mel & Mo, you are the ones that should be prohibited from commenting in this forum. Your personal attacks are totally uncalled for and don’t have anything to do with the subject. (And totally not funny if that is your attempt.) Guse has a perfect right to comment here even if his opinion does not agree with yours. You are typical of the narrow-minded liberals that are ruining this country. No brains it seems.
