i am in process of converting some athearn 40 and 50 foot flatcar kits into log flat cars, using details west high type log car bunks. does anyone know if the log car bunks will stay on the flatcar deck once they are glued on? i know not all log flat cars are the same, but i have never seen a detail photo of any athearn flatcar converted into a log flatcar.
I’ve converted several 40 foot cars and have worked it two ways. Some I simply glued the log bunks in place. Others I drilled tight holes for the nubs on the bottom of the bunk to fit into. That way I could change the car’s usage at my whim. I’ve had no problem with either coming off.
I am working on that right now. I am drilling holes for the nubs on the bottom of the bunk then plan on using an epoxy to glue them in. I also tool some of the old skeleton log cars from roundhouse and glued bunks on them to make a nice looking modernish log car. I think I may also follow some plans to modify the flat car by cutting away most of the deck and rebuilding some of the underbody. I am afraid though that I will be losing a lot of weight though so I may not. I will post some pics next week when I get some time.
