Cookie-Cutter Query

Hey guys:

I have a question for those who have used the cookie-cutter method for the plywood table top for their layouts. Has anyone ever cut away everything except just the subroadbed for the track leaving everything else open? Seems that any structures and any scenic details needing support can be supported by separate pieces of plywood bases secured by risers from below. Just curious as to whether anybody has done this before.

Yes.

I did it on an old layout with great success.

It gives you a chance to model scenery below the track level quite easily.

Thanks PC.

I think I’m going to go back and cut out the rest and leave just the subroadbed.

I came out with some interesting shapes when I pulled the non track bits out!!

I’m a, “Yes,” so far, but all of the subroadbed that I’ve completed is intended for hidden track, so that’s a very heavily qualified, “yes.”

I already know where passenger platforms, the main station building, engine servicing structures and such are going, and they are on the same level as the sub-roadbed, so they will be provided for when I cut that particular cookie. (In fact, they are intended to be surrounded by trackwork, all at one level.) Off-railroad structures, especially smaller-scale background structures (forced perspective) will be provided for individually.

In the final analysis, that, “yes,” will become, “both of the above.”

Got a 2 X 6 area in the middle cut out, and an 18" X 18" area cut out ready for the lake, river, pond, whatever. Just debating about the upper portion of the 4’ X 8’. Will just leave certain portions cut, but intact when screwing to the risers. If I want to change later, I can cut away completely. Easier to remove later if need be.

How is the best way to construct and elevate a mountain region and yet be able to lift it out to work on the track on back side?
