Corrour Station

When my wife, Dawn said ‘Why don’t you take a couple of days away?’
Now some members here know Dawn is disabled and taking time off is not an easy option. Anyway with our oldest grandson staying and looking after Dawn, two nights staying in the converted signal box at Corrour was booked.

Corrour Station is the highest railway station on Britains rail network. It has no actual road access. Either travel by train or walk 20 miles to it. The station was built by the North British Railway for the Corrour Estate.

When British Railways resignaled the line the signal box was no longer required and the Corror Estate took it over; converting it into three rooms for people to stay.

Corrour Estate built a cafe, restaurant for people visiting or passing by . I say passing by. Corrour Station is a mecca for wallkers. The starting point on walking to Fort William or around. Loch Ossian.

You piqued my curiosity about the elevation of Corrour Station, which is almost certainly lower than any of the track of the Denver & Rio Grande Western as an example.

Oh there are many railroads higher than Corrour Station. It just happens to be BRs highest. Certainly remote. A 20 mile walk to it is not my idea of fun.

The platform is the length of one carriage. All passenger trains stop there; even the Caledonian Sleeper.

Trains are longer than the platform

Even the Hogwarts Express visits there.

My home for two nights. I loved it.

I hiked from Bridge of Orchy to Ft William back in 2002. The day across Rannoch Moor was my favorite. I met my future wife on that trip.

That was a good hike. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

When I was at Corrour I did not do any hiking. Due to breaking my ankle a few years ago I cannot walk a distance. My interest was to watch the trains.

A long train at a short platform. Fort William to London Euston Caledonian Sleeper.

Looking east towards Loch Ossian

Stray off the paths and it is a boggy marsh.

The Scottish Highlands are one of my favorite places on earth to visit.

Corrour Station is a simple track plan of a train passing island platform with a siding for goods traffic for the Estate…

Traffic these days consists of mainly passenger trains with a few goods trains up and down.

During the steam engine running days where was a plethora of freight trains; mostly fish trains from Mallaig.

Track at the siding is not being looked after. (Modellers note that things are not always perfect.)

Thank you for looking

I had the best fish and chips ever on the pier at Mallaig. Our guide got it from a local shop. After our hike, we took the steam train there. It’s the one from the Harry Potter movie.

That could be the ‘Hogwarts Express’ (picture above) or ‘The Jacobite’.

Pity it’s a Hall and not a Castle…
