I’ve standardised on Micro-Trains N scale body-mount couplers for my HOn3 rolling stock kits, and they seem to play pretty nicely with the Kadee #714s that come on the ready-to-run HOn3 rolling stock. However, I’m attempting to fit some front couplers on my brass steam locomotives, and it looks like my only option for a couple of locomotives is Sergeant couplers. I was wondering if anyone else has tried this combination, of Sergeants to HOn3, and how well did it work?
Not sure about the compatability between HO and N scale couplers, but Sergent couplers are incompatible with practically every other standard HO scale brand on the market. They even warn you of that on their web site.
The only thing I can suggest is that your try one and see for yourself.
Have you gone to the Kadee site and checked their conversions page. In HO I was pointed to these pages and I was surprised at the detail listed on what to cut out and which couplers to use. Don’t know if they have conversions for HOn3 or not, but if you haven’t looked there, it is certainly worth a try. I have gotten the couplers I need to do the conversions, but haven’t done any yet.
You could check and see if Micro-Trains has such a site.
For tbdanny: Have you had any issues with the Micro-Trains N couplers, such as over-ride/under- ride on grades, not enough swing on curves? Does the uncoupling pin come out at a reasonable height? Which model MT couplers did you use? I’m asking because I haven’t gotten as far along in my experiments as you have. I bought some MT 1016s for installation trials, but haven’t actually installed them yet.
Thanks for that - that’s exactly what I was after.
Fred,
I haven’t had any issues with the Micro-Trains couplers - the trip pins came out with a comfortable gap above the tracks, and they’re able to go through a #4 turnout and transition grade to a 3% gradient without any problems.
