Does anyone know of a good match for the Maroon paint CP rail used for it’s old F7A’s and B’s. Our local hobby stores keeps telling me that their paint is the closest, but upon trying it’s not even close to what I need. I guess I am looking for on-line stores that I could order some small samples from.
I am not an expert by any means, but I know someone who had the same frustration. Three things to remember.
If you are using a photo is the colour in the photo correct?
Red/ maroon paint use to easily fade back in those days so you might see two different reds on two different loco’s depending on when they were painted.
Did you mix the paint in the can well? That can make a difference.
What you can do is change the colour of the paint yourself by experimenting to get the desired results.
You could take a look at “Soo Line Maroon” paint too. Canadian Pacific started using dark red on their passenger cars after they bought a large stake in the Soo Line…who used that color red on their passenger cars because after they’d bought the Wisconsin Central they liked the WC passenger cars painted that color…which were painted that shade of red to match their older woodside passenger cars, which were unpainted (but heavily varnished) natural redwood in color.
BADGER MODEL FLEX has Canadian National and Canadian Pacific specific water-based acrylic paint. These paints were (I believe) were created in conjunction with the CN and CP SIG’s (special interest groups) for those modelling Canadian Roads.
The specific paint you are looking for is the #16-160 CP Tuscan Red.
I’ve used the CN paint version and it is pretty ‘bang on’ correct.
